About The Escapist Expo
The Escapist Expo (Expo) is the real-life extension of The Escapist Magazine. The Escapist speaks to the genre that grew up with video games in their living rooms, devoured comic books and sci-fi novels in their free time, or played (or are still playing) collectible card games with their friends. It’s for those who discovered niche hobbies like Dungeons & Dragons® and Pathfinder®. Expo unites fans of videogames, tabletop games, science fiction, fantasy, comics, music and more in a celebration of everything great in multi-media escapism. Escapist Expo is for the escapist in all of us.
At its inaugural 2012 event, Escapist Expo rocked Downtown Durham, North Carolina with an unexpected attendance of close to 6,000 people. In 2013, we hope to shatter that record by both expanding our offerings and our physical footprint.
Escapist Expo will incorporate the Durham Convention Center, the historic Carolina Theater, and Durham Armory for all regular scheduled programming. The Saturday Night Shindig, headlining Gavin “Miracle of Sound” Dunne, will be held at the critically acclaimed MOTORCO Music Hall, just blocks from the rest of the action.
I ordered a pass. What happens now?
By ordering a single pass you will have registered as an attendee for the event automatically. If you have ordered multiple passes all of them are currently filed under your name, so only you will be able to pick up the passes at the event. You will, however, be issued a Registration Code for each additional pass you have ordered. The codes can be found on your user profile page.
If you would like to register your friends so that they can simply pick up their own pass at the show, you may do so by visiting this page and using the Registration Codes you have been issued.
If your friends would like to preregister for events here on the site they will need to use their Registration Code instead to create an account themselves. Just share the desired code with them to do so.
None of this is required, but is provided as a convenience depending on your plans for the show.
All passes ordered between now and the event are only available to be picked up at the show (Will Call). Be advised that preregistrants will have their own line at registration, and exhibitors and speakers will also have their own line at registration!
How do I register more than one pass?
When you purchase one or more Expo passes with your account you are effectively buying vouchers. You will soon be able to assign each pass to an individual who will be attending.
Will I be able to receive my pass in the mail?
We will not be mailing passes this year. You can still save time by pre-registering and picking up your pass at Will Call.
I'd like to bring my children. Should I buy them passes?
Given the nature of videogames, the content available on The Escapist, and the environment of conventions as a whole The Expo will have material that is not suitable for all ages. Attendees 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult, and all attendees over the age of 6 must have an entry pass.
Do you offer any discounts to students?
Yes we do! We are happy to extend a 20% discount off of one entry fee per college student. Simply register at the site with a .edu email address, or change the address on your existing account. Once you have confirmed the address you will automatically see a 20% discount off of the most expensive single entry pass in your cart. If you need to register multiple students, each student must register on the site with their own separate .edu address.
How about discounts for active military personnel?
We are honored to offer a discount to our US servicemen and women. With valid identification of active service, military personnel may enjoy a complimentary 3-day pass for him- or herself. Simply add the appropriate pass to your cart and use the coupon MILITARY13 at checkout. You will need to pick up your pass at Registration at the event.
Do not use the military discount to reserve "free" or delayed payment passes. Those without proper credentials will have their reservations canceled!
Can I combine any discounts?
Yes! If you are a Publisher's Club member at The Escapist as well as a student, both discounts will apply. To do so, you will need to first log in to the Expo site using your credentials from The Escapist. If your registered email address does not already end in .edu you will need to change your address here on the Expo site and confirm the change.
I want to volunteer! Where do I sign up?
Visit the Volunteer page for more information on applying. You will be asked to provide some basic contact information and a few questions about any special skills that would help place you in the best position at the show.
Should I still buy a pass if I plan to volunteer?
You should definitely register for a pass. Although we are excited to engage as many volunteers as we can, it is very possible we will have more willing volunteers than we can use. If you are chosen to be a volunteer you can transfer your paid registration to a friend, or we will gladly refund your entry fee.
Do you have an official harassment policy?
Yes. The Escapist EXPO is dedicated to providing a harassment-free experience for everyone, regardless of gender, gender identity and expression, fandom, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, political background, etc.
Please read the Harassment Policy in its entirety for more information.
